We build from the bottom up. Gravity keeps us generally constrained to the idea that we can only build from the bottom up. And building from the ground up isn’t a bad principle, either. When the church began nearly 2000 years ago, it was built from the ground up –one soul at a time. Our U.S. government was founded with the principle that “we the people” shall limit our government, because small government means bigger, better and more responsible citizens (so long as they are Christian). Every family starts with a mother and father. Every society or cultural group is a composite of many families. And the entire Church of Jesus is composed of millions of local congregations that are composed of individual families and members. Even our own bodies began as two separate cells, merging as one, then dividing into millions of cells. God created everything to start small and develop into something that has a huge and meaningful impact.
This is still true of the church. Our world focuses on big government, big community and even big markets and while all of these things seem beneficial, empires rarely remain beneficial. But the power of the Church is that it has the incredible ability to be both big and small; the ways of God are often paradoxical in nature. Jesus humbled Himself and became a suffering servant, full of grace and truth and God exalted Him so that His Name is Higher than any other name. But these days we rarely think that small can have an impact –but the truth is that small has the greatest impact.
Don’t get lost in numbers –that’s the way of the world. God wins our battles –and He loves to use the “small” and “ineffectual” things of this world to show His mighty strength. Please don’t underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit to use someone like you. God is earnestly looking for a faithful heart that believes what He has said. We are being built as the House of God and prayer really is one of the “mortars” that holds us together and makes us strong as a unit. Pray in the Name of Jesus that you might affect one soul this week and draw that person to Jesus. Pray because God hears the humble heart that knows that one simple life together with God is a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s change this world, one life at a time.
Pray with confidence,
George
